this entry is for hello kitty lovers; if you dislike…refrain.
最近跟食物有仇

我總是相信什麼事情都是百分之九十靠努力 百分之十靠運氣
to comply with sabina chang’s birthday game which i bailed on…

i have slept terribly for the past 5 days.
toss and turn. wake up sporadically.
nightmare after nightmare.
about the typhoon, mudslides in taiwan
about being jilted and betrayed
about losing all my dang teeth….
have had a very emotionally volatile week
one night i’m crying my eyes out
the nxt day i’m laughing manically all night
i hope this is not a normal occurrence
or i’m going to ask the doc for a prozac subscription!!!
i spend my life chasing………….
not just my dreams
but an amalgamation of alot of other people’s dreams;
for which i take responsibility.
in the process, traits such as being
manipulative, ruthless, competitive, harsh, and having utter disregard
are heightened because it is what i thought
would give me better ammo to succeed.
i was wrong.
i AM wrong.
back to the basics; to wanting less, to caring more,
to being a genuine, altruistic, and a kindred person;
the sunset over unionville main street last night
and the sense of inner peace that comes with….!
i’ve always valued being taiwanese;
but really if you want to get technical, i’m 100% pure-bred hakka-taiwanese.
who the hell can tell the difference? i certainly never cared much.
growing up, being hakka was always associated with some backward mountain culture where the women were worked like dogs and the men were brazen and frugal. traditional values permeated and the language was seriously outdated and insults contained calling someone a ‘the idiot that eats alot of rice”.
one drunken night in kenting, i was speaking with some aboriginal surfers who went on to babble about how hakka people were the most hard-working mofos they’d ever met, citing many examples of peoples’ names i totally forgot but for the first time, i felt curious about my heritage.
just-in-time, my dad got himself elected to be north american hakka association president. a title really long in words but really short in resources. toronto was selected to hold the bi-annual continental conference. my parents were up to their ears organizing this with the local organizations. i’ve been involved in many organizations over the years, but when they took the finale bows last night, i actually felt a tender proudness i’ve never felt before. there was very little young blood @ the conference, mostly middle-aged/senior citizens still trying to maintain/preserve what hasn’t gone extinct.
to my parents’ chagrin, i don’t know if i have it in me to continue their efforts of cultural promotion, my vocab is limited to saying “grandma, i want to eat fatty pork with rice”; but the main takeaway is that i better identify, i better understand, and i am more than ever, proud of being hakka-twnese.
happy father’s day 八八節 daddy . this one’s for you!
when i was little. like every other child, i was told the story of the turtle & the hare.
to this day, i still think it is the most ridiculous bullcrap fables that exists in the world of story-telling.
sure, it tells people that if you are not fast enough, slow & steady wins the race.
there are alot of better stories that have the same message.
what the turtle & the hare fable should really be is:
yes the hare got lazy and took a nap.
the turtle perservered and with its slow but steady pacing…made it almost past the finish line…
but the hare woke up in time and realized it had been really lazy and underestimated its competition…
than ran with every last inch of strength to the finish line and won the race.
sorry, mr. turtle. hard work & endurance doesn’t beat natural talent coupled with hard work.
that is more reflective of reality and that is what i would teach my kids.
you really know how to get me riled up
you really know how exactly to hit where it hurts most
like stabbing someone with a twist-blade
and worst of all, i know it’s on purpose.
congrats, you succeeded. asshole.
我氣炸了我
如果我真的會降龍十八掌
我一定廢了你一身的功夫!!!
